Q: What kind of steel do you use?

A: We use many types of High Carbon (1084, 1095, 0-1, 5160) and Stainless (AEB-L and cpm-154cm) steels. We heat treat in house and can handle any steel request. If you have questions about the right steel for your knife, contact us and we will help you choose. Join or Die Knives only use Damascus or other forge welded steels made in house.

Q: How long will it take for a custom knife?

A: A knife that is not already a stock piece can take 2 to 6 weeks depending on material availability and complexity. Most take between 2 and 4 weeks.

Q: Will my knife rust or patina?

A: If the blade is high carbon then yes. Carbon steel is prized for its toughness, edge retention, and sharpenability. Unlike stainless steel, special care must be taken to ensure long life. Unless the blade is meticulously cleaned and oiled, the surface of the steel will continue to age and patina over time. This is one of its best qualities in our opinion. A tarnished blade can always be brought back to a new shine.

Q: Can I be involved in the design of my knife?

A: Yes. We can discuss handle material, blade shape and size and steel type. These pieces are priced by quote according to the knife type.
